Azerbaijan says it captured six Armenian soldiers caught laying mines inside Azerbaijani territory

In the latest twist in a simmering dispute on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, this morning it was announced that six Armenian soldiers had been captured by Azerbaijani forces. Azerbaijan says that the Armenians were laying mines on its side of the border.

Armenia has confirmed the incident, also issuing the names of the six captured soldiers. It says, however, that they were captured whilst on the Armenian side of the border.

The incident appears to have happened near the Kalbajar/Gegharkunik region. The area has been tense for the last days.

On Tuesday (25 May) Armenian official sources said that Junior Sergeant Gevorg Khurshudyan was fatally wounded by gunfire of the Azerbaijani armed forces in the Upper Shorzha section of the Armenian Gegharkunik region, during the ongoing dispute on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
