A delegation of EU diplomats was in Armenia on Friday (21 January) to follow-up on discussions held between EU leaders, and the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Brussels on 15 December in the framework of the VI Summit of the Eastern Partnership.
The delegation, led by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, Toivo Klaar, also included the Isabel Dumont, the French President's Adviser on Continental Europe and Turkey. France currently has the rotating presidency of the European Union. The delegation on Thursday was in Baku for meetings with president Aliyev.
In Yerevan, the delegation met with the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, Armen Grigoryan. At the meeting both sides hailed the current level of Armenia-EU cooperation, highlighting the need to launch the border delimitation and demarcation process, and discussed humanitarian issues such as the detention of Armenian servicemen by Azerbaijan.
The European diplomats were later received by the Armenian prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan. Discussions focused on the situation in the South Caucasus in the aftermath of the 44-day war, and the steps taken to defuse the situation on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. The Armenian readout noted that the Armenian PM and the EU representatives also exchanged views on the results of the recent high level meetings between Aliyev and Pashinyan in Sochi, and Brussels.
Finally, the sides stressed the need for the full implementation of the peace process under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the intensification of the Co-Chairs' activities, the Armenian readout stated.
On his part, EUSR Toivo Klaar later tweeted,
