Klaar's mandate extended by one year

The mandate of Toivo Klaar as EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Conflict in Georgia has been extended by one year, until 31 August 2023. Klaar was first appointed to the post in November 2017. The decision was taken by representatives of the 27 EU member states meeting in Brussels on Monday (19 June).

As EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar oversees issues related to the settlement of conflicts and regional interaction according to a mandate given to him by theĀ  member states. Whilst terms for EUSR are usually for five years, Klaar's renewal for an additional year reflects a need for continuity at a time when the EU is playing an increasingly important role in the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and as regional issues become increasingly important for the South Caucasus countries.
