The Armenian prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, announced yesterday (9 February), that a proposal had been submitted to Azerbaijan on restoring road communication.
Speaking at a government session, the Armenia PM said that "the proposals on roads have been formulated and conveyed. We have submitted these offers to Azerbaijan, Russia and international partners. As soon as we receive a positive response from Azerbaijan, we are ready to carry out the restoring and building process".
Following a meeting between Pashinyan and the Azerbaijani president, Ilham Aliyev, in Brussels last December, it was agreed to proceed with the restoration of railway lines. However, the opening of road communications, in line with the trilateral agreement, is yet to be agreed upon.
Pashinyan noted that he had also set up a working group to organise the construction of the railway. He said that Armenia and Azerbaijan had agreed to restore railway communication in “accordance with international rules within the framework of the legislation and sovereignty of the countries, which means that border, customs and other controls should be exercised at the border crossing points”. However, while a verbal agreement had been reached with Azerbaijan, he said that something should be legally recorded on paper and signed.
