Pashinyan not satisfied by CSTO response to border issue

Armenia’s caretaker prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, has said that Armenia is not satisfied with the slow response of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) to the ongoing dispute on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Speaking to parliament today (26 May), Pashinyan confirmed that he would not rule out taking the matter to the UN Security Council if Armenia’s levers with the CSTO or its bilateral treaty with Russia are insufficient to solve the problem.

According to Armenpress, Pashinyan reportedly drew attention to the fact that neither the CSTO member-states nor the organisation itself had yet publicly expressed the clear stance that Azerbaijan must pull its troops back. The caretaker prime minister claimed that Azerbaijan’s actions on the border are an attempt to instigate a military clash, which Baku can use to justify the implementation of a corridor connecting Azerbaijan to its western exclave Nakhichevan by force.

Since 12 May, there have been several disputes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, with Yerevan accusing Azerbaijan of entering its territory. Baku denies the accusations, claiming that its servicemen are strengthening Azerbaijan’s border protection services within the territorial boundaries of Azerbaijan, in line with maps available to both sides.
